Picture a woman in Ntinda with money in her hand.
She needs what you sell. A friend mentioned your business, so she searches for you on her phone, on mobile data, between two meetings. Your website starts to load. The screen stays white. She waits a few seconds, gives up, and taps the next name on Google.
She never calls. She never complains. She pays your competitor, and you never find out she existed.
That is the most expensive thing about a weak website: it loses you customers in complete silence. Nobody sends an invoice for the sales you didn’t make. There is no line for them in your accounts. So the website sits there for years, looking fine to you and quietly sending business to someone else.
Here is the honest question every business owner should ask: is my website making me money, or costing me money? There is no such thing as a neutral website. It is either working for you or working against you.
Why “we already have a website” is not the same as having one that works
Most business websites in Uganda were built to exist. Someone said, “We need a website,” a price was agreed, it went live, and everyone moved on. It was treated like a signboard: put it up once and forget it.
But your customers don’t treat it like a signboard. They treat it like your front desk. It is where they decide whether you are real, whether you can be trusted with their money, and whether you are worth a phone call. It does this job day and night, including when your office is closed.
A good front desk wins business. A locked door with dust on it loses it. Your website is one of the two.
The 5 silent leaks that drain a business website
After years of building and rescuing websites for businesses, NGOs, universities and government programmes, we see the same five problems again and again. Each one takes a minute to check, and you can do it yourself today.
1. It is too slow on a phone
Your customers are not sitting at a desktop on office Wi-Fi. They are on a phone, on mobile data, in the middle of something else. A website that feels quick on your laptop can crawl on their screen, and each extra second gives them another reason to leave. Google notices slow pages too.
Test it: turn off Wi-Fi and open your website on your phone using mobile data. Count how long it takes before you can actually read and tap something. If you feel impatient, so do your customers.
2. Nobody can tell what you do
Many homepages open with “Welcome to our website” or “Excellence in everything we do.” Those words could belong to anyone. A visitor needs three answers almost instantly: What do you do? Is it for me? What should I do next?
Test it: show your homepage to someone who doesn’t know your business for five seconds, then take the phone away. Ask what you sell and what they would click. If they can’t say, neither can your customers.
3. Google can’t find you
A beautiful website that nobody finds is a billboard inside a locked room. If your site has no clear page titles, no real description of your services and nothing about where you work, Google has very little to show. The customer who is searching for exactly what you sell, right now, finds someone else.
Test it: search Google for what you sell plus your town, such as “car hire Entebbe” or “accounting firm Kampala”. Use the words a customer would use, not your company name. Are you there? Who is above you?
4. It is hard to say yes
A customer who has decided to buy is precious. Don’t make them hunt. If your phone number is buried, your contact form is broken, there is no WhatsApp button, or they can’t pay the way people here actually pay, you are turning away someone who has already said yes.
Test it: pretend to be a customer. From your homepage on your phone, count how many taps it takes to reach you or to pay. Then send a message through your own contact form. Did it arrive? Be honest: when did you last check?
5. Nobody is watching it
This is the leak that does the most damage, because it can last for weeks. A plugin update breaks the booking form. The security certificate expires and visitors see a “Not secure” warning. The domain renewal is missed. The site goes down on a Friday night and you hear about it on Monday, from an annoyed client.
Test it: answer one question. If your website went down right now, who would know, and how quickly? If the answer is “a customer would tell us,” you have this leak.
What a website that works actually does
A working website doesn’t only look good. It does a job that your team would otherwise have to do by hand. Here is what that looks like in work we have delivered.
- Electronic Tourism Link lists more than 900 places to stay across Uganda. Travellers search by town or property type, and can book and pay online by card or mobile money, or send the host a free inquiry.
- Justice Centres Uganda helps people find free legal help. Type your district and the site shows the centre that serves you, with its address, phone lines and directions.
- Seeta University’s health conference lets researchers submit their abstracts online, and delegates register and pay by Mobile Money or card, without chasing anyone by phone.
Those are three very different organisations, with one thing in common: the website is not decoration. It does real work, every hour of the day.
What to do this week
You don’t need to rebuild anything to start. You need to know where you stand, so do these three things:
- Check your website free. Put your address into our free website health check. In about 10 seconds you get a score out of 100 for security, speed, SEO and experience, with the fixes in plain English. No sign-up.
- Switch on an alarm. SiteWatch checks your website around the clock and tells you the moment it goes down. It is free for up to 3 websites.
- Fix the biggest leak first. You don’t have to do everything at once. Start with whatever is costing you the most customers.
Your competitor’s website is already answering your customers
